I took a panel off in the front bumper (there are a couple of small panels that come off in the front bumper) and took that to color match. And in case anyone's curious, they could not match the color at home depot. Has anyone had experience with something like this?Ĭlick to expand.Yeah, i may have to just do that and pay $35-$40 for it - doesn't look like i have a choice here. I can't exactly bring in my bumper to have it spectro analyzed for the exact color, although it did occur to me that i can certainly take off the fuel door and bring that in instead to get a exact color match (understanding that color on metal and plastic will vary). I figure i can roll it on, wet sand it and do it a couple of times to get the desired outcome/surface, then clear coat it. I understand that for automotive paint with "sparkles", this is not an option, but for a bumper, i wouldn't mind just rolling a color on a primed plastic surface, instead of going through the hassle of spraying it. I was wondering if there's a way to use the automotive color codes to translate that to paint you can mix and buy at a place like home depot. I managed to sand it back down to the primer that i put on, but at this point, i have no paint color options in a spray can, and little confidence that buying it online for $40 would give me a near exact match.

It was so off that i checked the code a few times, and even called Duplicolor.

I tried to do the same for a Lexus RX 350 yesterday and the color was WAY off (way too light). As you can see from the pic, there's a fine line between the old and new paint on the topside of the bumper - i taped it off when painting it and wet sanded it down because i didn't want to paint the entire bumper for this. But it came out okay and i clear coated it, and i'm fine with the result.

I know these are not to be exact, and those that do cost a lot more. I recently got a can of duplicolor paint (silver) for my honda accord (to bondo and paint the rear bumper) and it was a bit darker than i would've liked.
